Automatic Sheet Feeders

Integrated Sheet & Cap Feeding Mechanisms
For Automated Palletizing Systems
In high-performance manufacturing and packaging environments, sheet and cap placement must be accurate and consistent, without slowing production. When a palletizing robot does not have sufficient cycle time to pick and place sheets or caps on its own, an automatic sheet feeder can be integrated into the system to handle material placement.
Kaufman Engineered Systems designs and integrates custom automatic sheet feeder mechanisms that dispense, position, and place sheets or caps at the correct point in the palletizing sequence. These systems may be used for bottom sheets, slip sheets, tier sheets, top sheets, cap sheets, or poly sheets, depending on the application, material, pallet pattern, and throughput requirements.
By automating sheet and cap placement with dedicated feeder equipment, manufacturers can improve load stability, protect products, maintain line speed, and reduce manual handling while keeping the palletizing process running efficiently.

Options for Sheet Feeders
Kaufman Offers Solutions For Every Application
Our automated sheet feeding systems are designed and integrated within our automated systems to dispense protective sheets during the automation/palletizing process. These sheets can be made of corrugated fiberboard, kraft paper, plastic film, or anti-slip materials, depending on the application. The sheet dispensers automatically retrieve sheets and place them at precise points within the process, including beneath the load, between layers, and on top of the finished load. These systems play an important role in unit load formation, ensuring pallets are stable, protected, and ready for transport or storage.
Kaufman designs sheet feeder systems that integrate directly with:

-
Robotic palletizing cells
-
Automated pallet dispensing systems
-
Conveyor and pallet transport systems
-
Stretch wrapping equipment
-
Complete end-of-line packaging systems
Bottom Sheet Feeders
Bottom sheet feeders automatically place a sheet at the base of the load-building process. Depending on the system design, the sheet may be placed on top of an empty pallet before the load is built, or it may support a process where the load is formed on a sheet before a pallet is inserted later in the handling sequence.
Bottom sheet feeders help create a stable, consistent surface for load building while reducing manual handling and keeping the palletizing process moving.
Benefits of bottom sheet feeders include:
- Consistent sheet placement at the start of the palletizing cycle
- Improved load stability at the base of the load
- Reduced manual handling of sheet materials
- Better protection from pallet gaps, rough boards, dirt, or moisture when used with pallets
- Support for automated pallet handling and pallet insertion strategies
- Reliable operation in high-throughput palletizing environments
Top Sheet & Cap Sheet Feeders
Top sheet and cap sheet feeders automatically apply protective sheets or caps to the top of a completed pallet load. These systems are often integrated before stretch wrapping or other downstream equipment to help protect the top layer, improve containment, and prepare the load for shipping or storage.
Cap sheet feeders may be used when a sturdier sheet is required or when the sheet is designed to extend beyond the load, allowing the edges to be folded or secured during the wrapping process.
Benefits of top sheet and cap sheet feeders include:
- Automated placement on completed pallet loads
- Protection for the top layer of product
- Improved load containment before stretch wrapping
- More consistent finished pallet presentation
- Reduced manual handling at the end of the line
- Integration with cap plows, load lifters, hold-downs, and stretch wrapping systems when required
Top Poly Sheet Dispensers
Top poly sheet dispensers automatically apply a lightweight plastic sheet over the top of a completed pallet load. These systems are commonly used when products require added protection from moisture, dust, debris, or environmental exposure before the load moves into stretch wrapping, storage, or shipping.
A dedicated top poly sheet dispenser is used to handle sheet placement. Rather than having the robot place the sheet, the dispenser feeds and applies the poly material at the correct point in the line, helping maintain throughput while ensuring consistent top coverage.
Benefits of top poly sheet dispensers include:
- Automated top sheet application
The dispenser applies the poly sheet without requiring manual placement or robot cycle time. - Moisture and contamination protection
The plastic sheet helps shield the top of the pallet load from moisture, dust, debris, and other environmental exposure. - Consistent sheet coverage
The system dispenses and positions the sheet for reliable coverage before wrapping or downstream handling. - Support for high-throughput lines
Dedicated dispensing equipment allows the palletizing system to maintain speed without adding sheet placement to the robot’s workload. - Integration with stretch wrapping systems
Top poly sheet dispensers can work with hold-downs, load lifters, and stretch wrappers to help keep the sheet controlled and secure during wrapping.
Tier Sheet Feeders
Tier sheet feeders automatically insert sheets between product layers during palletizing. These systems are commonly used when loads require added layer-to-layer stability, especially when products do not naturally interlock during stacking.
Tier sheet feeders can help maintain throughput by placing sheets at the required layer intervals while the robot continues building the load.
Tier sheet feeders are commonly used for:
- Display packs
- Square cartons
- Flexible packaging
- Bagged materials
- Lightweight containers
- Loads requiring added layer stability
Benefits of tier sheet feeders include:
- Improved structural stability between layers
- Reduced product shifting during handling and transport
- Consistent sheet placement at required layer intervals
- Support for pallet patterns that need added reinforcement
- Reduced reliance on manual sheet insertion
- Improved efficiency in automated palletizing cells
When Automatic Sheet Feeders Make Sense
Maintaining Throughput without Slowing Down The Robot
Automatic sheet feeders are commonly used when the robot does not have enough time during the palletizing cycle to manually pick and place sheets or caps. By assigning sheet placement to a dedicated mechanism, the robot can continue handling product while the feeder manages the sheet or cap application.
An automatic sheet feeder may be the right solution when:
- The robot cannot place sheets or caps without slowing production
- Sheets must be placed at high speeds or frequent intervals
- Bottom sheets, tier sheets, top sheets, or cap sheets are consistently required
- Sheet placement must occur outside the robot’s normal motion path
- Material stacks, rolls, or bins require dedicated handling
- Placement accuracy and repeatability are critical
- Manual sheet placement creates safety, labor, or ergonomic concerns
- Throughput requirements demand a dedicated sheet handling process
Kaufman evaluates the full palletizing system to determine whether sheet placement should be handled by the robot, by an automatic feeder, or by a combination of both.
