Automatic Transfer Car Conveyors

Built to Divert or Merge

Kaufman’s automated transfer cars (sometimes referred to as T-Cars, transfer carts, T-Carts, or transfer trolleys) are mobile conveyor platforms that shuttle pallets, empty pallets, and dunnage across multiple parallel lanes—without building long, fixed conveyor runs. On high-speed packaging and distribution floors, they are often the simplest way to connect multiple palletizing lines to shared downstream processes such as stretch wrapping, labeling/verification, dual-load stacking, and shipping lanes. Our transfer car conveyors are specifically engineered to divert or merge palletized products, dunnage supplies, and empty pallets across multiple lanes, including transferring finished loads from several palletizer systems to a shared stretch wrapper, with designs intended for 24/7 operation.

Operationally, transfer cars help plants reduce forklift traffic and manual staging steps. That matters because forklift incidents remain a serious, persistent risk: according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in the U.S., nearly 100 workers are killed, and ~20,000 are seriously injured each year in forklift-related incidents, and overturns are a leading cause of fatalities.

In the sectors this page targets—food & beverage, paper & tissue, pharmaceutical & healthcare, and building products—transfer cars add value by improving throughput stability, footprint efficiency, and sequence control, while supporting sanitation, traceability, and load-stability requirements when integrated into a complete end-of-line system.

Choosing the Right Transfer Car Solution

The ideal transfer car configuration depends on throughput requirements, facility layout, available floor space, load characteristics, and the routing of materials throughout the operation. Kaufman Engineered Systems offers several transfer car designs, each engineered to solve specific production, packaging, pallet handling, storage, and shipping challenges. Systems can be configured with multiple transfer positions, high-low deck arrangements for full-load and empty-pallet exchange, laser positioning, and a variety of power delivery and track systems to meet the unique requirements of each application. Understanding the capabilities of each configuration can help identify the most effective solution for your operation.

Single Position Transfer Cars

Single Position Transfer Cars provide a straightforward and cost-effective solution for moving loads between conveyor lines. Designed to transport one load or pallet at a time, these systems are ideal for moderate throughput applications where transfer distances are relatively short and routing requirements are simple.

Common applications include moving palletized loads between production and packaging operations, feeding a single downstream process, or replacing forklift transport in specific areas of a facility. Their simplicity, reliability, and compact design make them an excellent choice for many material handling applications.

Ideal for:

  • One load per transfer cycle
  • Moderate throughput requirements
  • Short travel distances
  • Simple routing applications
  • Forklift reduction initiatives

Two-Position Inline Transfer Cars

Two-position inline transfer cars are designed to move two loads simultaneously, increasing throughput while maintaining a compact footprint. This configuration features two transfer positions connected as a single continuous deck, allowing the system to receive and discharge two loads simultaneously.

Inline transfer cars are often used when conveyor lines are aligned along the same centerline and production rates require greater transfer capacity than a single-position system can provide. By handling multiple loads in each cycle, these systems help maximize throughput while minimizing transfer times.

Ideal for:

  • High-throughput operations
  • Conveyor lines with aligned centerlines
  • Simultaneous pickup and discharge of two loads
  • Shared downstream equipment
  • Efficient pallet and load routing

Two-Position Side-by-Side Transfer Cars

Two Position Side-by-Side Transfer Cars provide additional flexibility by utilizing two independently operating transfer decks connected within a single system. Unlike inline configurations, each deck can pick up, transport, and discharge loads independently, allowing the transfer car to handle one, two, or multiple loads, depending on operational requirements.

This flexibility makes side-by-side transfer cars particularly valuable in facilities where conveyor centerlines do not align, where production rates vary between lines, or where routing requirements frequently change. They are often selected for retrofit projects and for complex material-handling systems requiring maximum operational adaptability.

Ideal for:

  • Variable production rates
  • Multiple routing scenarios
  • Misaligned conveyor centerlines
  • Retrofit applications
  • Flexible load handling requirements

Four-Position Transfer Cars

Four-position transfer cars provide the highest level of throughput and routing flexibility. Designed to accommodate up to four load positions, these systems can efficiently manage multiple conveyor lines, shared automation equipment, and complex material flow requirements.

Four-position transfer cars are commonly used when multiple production lines feed common palletizing, stretch wrapping, labeling, storage, or shipping operations. Their ability to move multiple loads during a single cycle helps maximize system efficiency while reducing the amount of conveyor infrastructure required throughout the facility.

For applications requiring enhanced stopping accuracy, higher travel speeds, or precise positioning, laser positioning systems can be integrated to further improve performance.

Ideal for:

  • Multi-line operations
  • Shared downstream automation
  • Complex routing requirements
  • High-volume facilities
  • Maximum throughput applications
